Time to Plant April 2009

What is the secret to successful plants? Read on to discover ways to successfully grow vegetables and flowers.

It's early spring and time to put our seeds and seedlings in the ground. Central Texas may get a freeze in April, therefore we may need to protect tender young seedlings by waiting until later in the month to plant. In my previous newsletter, I discussed the importance of tilling our beds and adding organic compost. With our beds tilled and fertilized, its time to row up the beds and plant. Following directions on seed and seedling labels ensures proper spacing, depth and sunlight requirements.

Tilling and adding organic compost are the two secrets to the soil. Tilling loosens and aerates the soil. This makes it easy for plants to send root systems down and sprouts up. Organic compost gives your plants the nutrients needed at the start of germination and early growth.

The next secret is irrigation. Proper watering can best be achieved by drip irrigation. You can regulate the time of watering and also the amount water applied. I will give future product reviews on various drip systems in my product review page.

The most important secret to growing plants is rain water. You can invest in an expensive collection system or just place a container under a down spout. Just Do It, gather that rain water and put it on your plants. If you are fortunate enough to have a pressurized rain water collection system, you can use a drip irrigation system to apply it. Although there is great satisfaction in watering your individual plants with a water can. You can give each plant the proper attention it requires.

The beginning of April also means it is time to bring my Plumeria out of hibernation. In the coming days I will set them out, and put them in the ground. I will be posting photos on the photo page soon. Go now to my product review page for information on products I use and the experience I've had with them.
